Young Athletes Shine at Rotary Figgy Kids Triathlon

Date:

Stevenson Park was filled with excitement and energy on Sunday, August 3, as dozens of young athletes gathered for the annual Rotary Figgy Kids Triathlon. The early morning event, which began at 7:00 a.m., invited kids of all experience levels to swim, bike, and run their way through a fun-filled summer challenge.

The triathlon was sponsored and organized by the Friendswood Rotary Club, under the leadership of organizer Cassie McGarvey. The event was designed to encourage outdoor activity, environmental awareness, and a love for the community’s parks. Named after Friendswood’s park-friendly mascot, Figgy the Squirrel, the triathlon supports the city’s Keep Friendswood Beautiful initiative, blending fitness with environmental stewardship.

The beginner-friendly course took participants through the scenic trails of Stevenson Park, where towering oak trees and native Texas plants provided a natural backdrop for the race. Racers began with a swim in the park’s pool, transitioned to a bike ride along cheering crowds of volunteers, and capped off their morning with a run beneath the shade of Friendswood’s signature oak canopy.

Figgy the Squirrel, the official mascot of Friendswood’s environmental efforts, made a special appearance during the festivities, delighting participants and families alike. Volunteers and Rotary Club members staffed the course, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all racers.

The event concluded with a celebration at the park pavilion, where finishers were awarded medals and treated to refreshments, bringing the Friendswood community together in a spirit of fun and fitness. With a growing number of participants each year, the Figgy Triathlon continues to establish itself as a cherished summer tradition that inspires kids to stay active, appreciate nature, and take pride in their hometown.
