Enrollment exceeds projections

Date:

Pearland ISD is beginning the new school year with a higher-than-expected enrollment, administrators say.

While projections called for 20,668, the actual fall enrollment is closer to 20,850, with more than 270 students being new to the district. More students are good for budgeting but requires adjustments when it comes to actual classrooms since the district has to ensure teacher-to-student numbers are balanced.

“Sometimes in elementary school you have to move teachers — not always the greatest thing to do,” Superintendent Larry Berger told board members during a report. “They’ve set up their classroom at one school, but because the numbers aren’t there they need to move where the numbers are.”

Class sizes in all grade levels will continue to be monitored, he added.
