A proposed community events center on O’Day Road won’t get a permit needed to move forward.
Pearland Council members on Monday voted unanimously to deny a conditional use permit at 1826 O’Day Road for an events center for the Kural Koodal Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes heritage, culture and sense of community.
“I think an events center is a great idea, just probably not here,” Councilmember Layni Cade said.
A public hearing Monday drew five speakers in opposition, citing concerns about traffic, safety and noise. Alcohol sales were also among concerns.
“Every time you serve alcohol you can’t control everybody,” O’Day Road resident Alex Cravey said. “There are a number of commercial zones that would better suit an events center.”
The road has few sidewalks and much foot traffic, he said.
Both applicants, Dr. Thandavarajan Gopalakrishnan and founder Mala Gopal, spoke at the public hearing and said they hoped to address neighbors’ concerns.
Mayor Kevin Cole reminded residents that the Garden O’Day District does allow uses other than residential.
“I understand the reasons against the events center,” he said, “but also want to make sure you’re aware there could be other uses there that are not residential.”
Uses allowed by right — or without a special permit — include certain businesses such as a childcare, bakery, church, financial institution or office, according to city documents.
Planning and Zoning Commissioners on Sept. 2 voted 5-1 not to recommend the conditional use permit.
