The Friendswood Mustangs Tennis team is moving on to the Regional semifinals after a hard-fought 10–5 quarterfinal victory over Barbers Hill on Monday.
The Mustangs found themselves trailing 4–3 after doubles play but rallied with an impressive singles performance to clinch the win. Friendswood’s girls dominated the singles round, winning five matches in a row behind strong performances from Maadhvi Bhojani, Bella Benson, Evia Rand, Alyssa Borda, and Simran Virdi. On the boys’ side, Preston Rigsby and Riley Rand added two key victories before the remaining matches were pulled once the team secured the match.
With the win, Friendswood advances to the Regional semifinals, where they will return to College Station to face the winner of Austin LASA or Georgetown on Thursday morning. A victory there would send the Mustangs to the Regional finals on Friday at 8 a.m., also in College Station. The Regional champion will move on to compete at the state tournament in Waco next week.
Friendswood Head Coach David Cook praised his players for their determination and focus after falling behind early. “Our team showed tremendous grit,” Cook said. “They fought back after a tough doubles round and played some of their best tennis of the season when it mattered most.”
