Required by state law to hold a record vote, Pearland ISD Trustees in December voted not to adopt a policy establishing a daily period of prayer or Bible reading on campuses.
“Traditionally we would not have to come before the board to take no action, but the way the law is written, I have to bring it before the board for a recorded vote to say yes we are going to pass a policy or no, we are not,” Superintendent Larry Berger said.
Since required to vote, trustees instead adopted a resolution to take no policy action, agreeing that Pearland ISD students already have the right to religious expression.
“We do not need a policy for this to happen, because it can happen now without a policy,”
Board members agreed.
“It only makes sense that we continue to let students be who they are and worship how they see fit,” Trustee Kristopher Schoeffler said.
“More government oversight on freedom of religion is not where we want to be,” Crystal Carbone added.
