A $1 million grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife could help fund the all-abilities playground planned for Independence Park.
Pearland council members on Dec. 8 voted to move forward with the grant application.
An all abilities play space will be part of Phase II of Independence Park, which was a component of the city’s successful 2023 bond election.
Design of the new park phase will happen this summer, with construction expected to begin in fall 2027.
The council thanked Rep. Jeff Barry and the state for making the grant available.
“Rep. (Ed) Thompson did it for our first playground and here we are with the second one,” Mayor Kevin Cole said.
Fundraising is continuing through the Forever Parks Foundation to cover inclusive play elements for the park.
“There was a baseline that was in the bond program for ‘23 of about $700,000,” Cole said. “Anything additional comes from fundraising.”
