Committee recommends $50.9 million bond package

Date:

After months of meetings and deliberation, the City of Friendswood’s 2026 Bond Election Ad Hoc Committee presented its final recommendations to City Council during the June 1 meeting, proposing a bond package totaling approximately $50.9 million.

The committee was formed to evaluate the city’s long-term capital needs and identify projects that could be presented to voters in a future bond election. Over the course of its work, members reviewed infrastructure needs, parks and recreation improvements, public facilities and drainage projects before developing a final recommendation.

The proposed package includes funding for several major categories of projects. Drainage improvements account for the largest share of the proposal, reflecting continued community concerns about flooding and stormwater management. Additional funding is recommended for parks and recreation facilities, including improvements to existing parks and amenities, as well as upgrades to city-owned buildings and other public infrastructure.

According to the committee’s report, the proposed bond package would be supported through an estimated one-cent increase in the city’s property tax rate. City officials emphasized that the committee’s recommendation is advisory and that no bond election has yet been called.

Council members received the report and discussed the committee’s work, which involved balancing infrastructure needs with the potential tax impact on residents. The committee’s recommendations represent one of the most significant capital investment proposals considered by the city in recent years.

If ultimately approved by City Council and voters, the projects would be funded through bond proceeds and completed over multiple years. City leaders indicated that additional public discussion and review will occur before any final decision is made regarding a future bond election.
