Lutheran South Academy captured its second consecutive TAPPS Division II State Baseball Championship, rallying from a three-run deficit to defeat Fort Worth Christian 4-3 in dramatic fashion at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Pioneers’ title defense nearly stretched into a second day after severe weather interrupted the championship game for almost five hours before the sixth inning. When play resumed, Lutheran South found itself trailing 3-0 and facing just six outs to keep its championship hopes alive.
Instead, the Pioneers mounted a comeback that will be remembered as one of the most dramatic in program history. Lutheran South scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game and force a decisive seventh inning.
With the game deadlocked in the bottom of the seventh, Richard Jones Jr. delivered the championship-winning hit, driving in the winning run with a walk-off RBI single to secure the 4-3 victory and a second straight state title for the Pioneers.
The championship was the culmination of another successful season under Head Coach Aaron Schneider, who has built Lutheran South into one of the premier baseball programs in TAPPS competition. The back-to-back championships further cement the program’s standing among the state’s elite private school baseball teams.
The victory was especially impressive considering the unusual circumstances surrounding the game. Players, coaches and fans endured the lengthy weather delay before returning to complete the final two innings. Rather than losing momentum, Lutheran South used the break as an opportunity to regroup and mount its comeback.
The state championship adds another trophy to Lutheran South’s athletic accomplishments and gives the senior class the opportunity to finish its high school careers as repeat state champions.
