‘Lunch with a Scientist’ brings careers to the table

Date:

By Lauren Traina

Friendswood High School Biomedical Science students had the opportunity to take career exploration beyond the classroom during the annual Lunch with a Scientist event on Friday.

Hosted by the FHS Biomedical Science Pathway, the event brings Biomedical Innovation Capstone students together with professionals representing a wide range of careers in healthcare, science, and related industries. Before the event, students explore biomedical careers and then sit down over lunch with a professional in a field that interests them.

This year’s guests represented careers including dermatology, internal medicine, nephrology, physician assistant studies, nursing, nurse practitioner roles, occupational therapy, physical therapy, radiology, dentistry, orthodontics, medical device sales, emergency medical services, scientific research and hospital administration.

While professional networking is often associated with college and the workforce, Lunch with a Scientist introduces those skills at the high school level. Students have the opportunity to sit across the table from professionals in fields they are considering and ask candid questions about education, career paths, challenges, and opportunities.

What began as a simple way to introduce networking at the high school level has evolved into a special tradition for students and professionals alike. Participants include former FHS employees and Friendswood High School graduates who once took part in the Health Science program and have returned to share their experiences with the next generation of students.

The experience also showcased collaboration among Friendswood ISD Career and Technical Education programs. FHS Culinary Arts students catered the lunch, providing another opportunity for students to apply skills learned in the classroom in a real-world setting.

Lunch with a Scientist is one of many ways Friendswood ISD connects classroom learning with future opportunities, giving students access to professionals who can offer insight, encouragement, and a firsthand look at potential career paths.

Friendswood ISD appreciates the professionals who volunteered their time and expertise to invest in FHS students and inspire the next generation of healthcare and science professionals.
