Although the Texas State Garden Club Spring Convention planned for Galveston in April was cancelled, Heritage Gardeners of Friendswood received good news by mail recently.

The Friendswood garden club members had won three state awards.

Heritage Junior Gardeners, called Junior Master Gardeners (JMG), are Texas Garden Club first place winners for two awards: Youth Garden Club and Youth Standard Flower Show.

Youth members in JMGs received first place recognition at District level and now State level. Special certificates were sent to the club for the youth group. Their leader/coach/instructor is garden club member and Galveston County Master Gardener Kaye Corey.

Corey is assisted at JMG meetings by Galveston County Master Gardeners Terri Winters and Jason Porterfield.

Patricia Martin, Heritage Gardener member and Galveston County Master Gardener won the State’s Club Program award. Martin’s program was a workshop she had given titled So you want to win a Blue Ribbon with your Horticulture Exhibit.

The workshop was held February 14, 2019 and prepared attendees by providing information on how to enter and possibly win at Horticulture Shows. The Heritage Gardeners held a Flower and Horticulture Show in April 2019.

In other club news, the Heritage Gardeners are celebrating National Garden Club Week June 7-13, 2020 with an online event at their Facebook page.

Members are sharing their gardens, their plants and their love for gardening at the site.

New officers have been virtually installed and the first meeting of the new year for the club is September 3, 2020 at the Marie Workman Garden Center in Friendswood. Everyone is welcome to attend.
