Former Lady Oiler basketball standout in NCAA tournament

Former Pearland girls basketball All-Stater DeYona Gaston is playing in the women’s NCAA basketball tournament for the Texas Lady Longhorns.

Gaston left the Pearland girls basketball program with a strong legacy regarding her high school accomplishments. They include:

  • Twice named a Class 6A All-State selection [2019, 2020] by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
  • Finished her high school career with 2,008 points.
  • In her senior year of 2019-20, earned Class 6A All-State honors from both the TABC and TGCA and was named the District Most Valuable Player. Her Pearland team went 24-11 overall and advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals.
  • Averaged 19.4 points per game on 52 percent shooting, 10.2 rebounds per game and 2.6 blocks per game as a senior.
  • Proved to be one of the best players in the nation as a junior in 2018-19, averaging 18.1 points per game on 52 percent shooting. Also averaged 9.5 rebounds per game and 1.9 blocks per game. Was named the Class 6A District Player of the Year and District Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to a TABC All-State selection.

Gaston is a sophomore for the Lady Horns and has made an impact for the team this season. Texas beat Baylor 67-58 for the Big 12 title and now has won their first two games in the NCAA tournament.

Texas beat Fairfield in the first round 70-52 and they continued their winning ways with a 78-56 win over Utah to advance to the Sweet 16.
