Texas Parks and Wildlife is cautioning outdoor enthusiasts to take wildfire precautions as cooler weather approaches and hunting season opens in September.
Any activities that create heat or sparks can ignite dry vegetation, according to Wes Moorehead, Texas A&M Forest Service Fire Chief.
“Since mid-June, Texas has been marked by devastating wildfires that have burned more than 75,000 acres,” said Moorehead said in a release.
Tips include avoiding driving over or parking on dry grass, adhering to burning restrictions and keeping tools such as a shovel and water handy to extinguish a fire should one start. Those with trailers are asked to ensure tires are properly inflated and chains or loose metal do not make contact with the roadway and cause sparks.
