Increased demand on the city’s water system prompted Pearland to enter Stage 2 of its drought contingency, implementing mandatory watering schedules.
Under stage 2, residents are restricted to watering lawns on the days they have trash service scheduled.
“You can still water your grass but we’re asking you to limit it to two days a week,” Mayor Kevin Cole said in the Aug. 30 announcement. “Do it on the days you have garbage collection; it’s easy to remember that way.”
In addition, the following are prohibited under stage 2:
– Watering lawns between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
– Operating pond fountains or interactive water features.
– Draining and refilling of swimming pools.
Violations of restrictions can result in a fine of up to $2,000. The city’s Centennial and Southdown Park splash pads are closed until further notice.
“We have to have the supply to provide central services such as fighting a fire or making sure you have enough drinking water,” Cole said.
