In a somber development in the early hours, the Friendswood community was shaken by the loss of a dedicated firefighter, Forest Bend Fire Chief John Norris. The incident unfolded following a response to a house fire in the 1300 block of Woodvine Street.
At approximately 1:11 a.m., the Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department, alongside teams from Forest Bend, League City, and Webster Fire Departments, were dispatched to a blaze at a vacant single-family residence. The firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control, successfully extinguishing it by 2:32 a.m.
However, the event took a tragic turn when Chief Norris, having returned home after the operation, suffered an acute medical emergency. He was promptly transported to HCA Clear Lake Hospital by Windsor EMS but, regrettably, succumbed to his condition.
Given that Chief Norris’ medical emergency occurred shortly after his involvement in active fire department duties, his death is officially recognized as a line-of-duty death. This classification underscores the inherent risks and sacrifices associated with the firefighting profession.
A statement published on the department’s Facebook page stated, “With profound sorrow, the Forest Bend Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to announce the passing of our cherished Chief, John Norris. Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader whose impact on our department will forever be remembered and honored.”
As the Friendswood Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the fire, the community mourns the loss of Chief Norris, remembering him for his service and commitment to public safety. The Forest Bend Fire Department, reeling from this loss, is managing inquiries regarding arrangements for Chief Norris.
