CCISD is Expanding Learning Opportunities for Intermediate Students

Date:

A sixth-grade required course called “Launch” has been approved by the Clear Creek ISD Board of Trustees for the 2024-2025 school year.

The launch will allow students to develop Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People further to help them navigate the transition from fifth to sixth grade and set them up for academic success. It will also incorporate career exploration and discovery to help students identify a pathway for high school and potential career options.

WAVE Basics will continue to be required for students in the WAVE program at League City Intermediate and Westbrook Intermediate instead of the Launch course. CCISD’s Science Magnet Program students will receive the Launch curriculum through the Scientific Literacy course.

The exploratory team has identified ways to redesign learning systems and master scheduling to open additional elective courses and mitigate concerns about limited sixth-grade elective options.

Additional changes for next school year include:

• The eighth-grade versus the sixth and seventh-grade requirements will now complete the four-semester credit requirement for physical education. This will give sixth-grade students an additional elective if they choose to complete the state requirement in their seventh and eighth-grade years.

• A Pre-Athletics Health and Fitness Course for sixth-grade students will be added to all intermediate schools next year, and an eighth-grade dance elective will be added by the 2026-2027 school year.

• The double-blocked English Language Arts requirement for on-level ELA sixth and seventh-grade students will be removed. This period will be used for the new Launch course for sixth-grade students. For seventh-grade students, this will provide additional elective opportunities.

Incoming sixth-grade families will learn more about the course offerings during the course selection process beginning in January 2024.
