Educator and students to be honored

Date:

The Anson Jones Masonic Lodge of Friendswood announces their latest initiative to honor local educators and support outstanding students.

The prestigious Mirabeau B. Lamar Award will be presented on April 2 to Friendswood High School Theatre Director Kathy Powdrell, while four high school seniors will each receive college scholarships.

Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas, has been called “the father of the Texas public school system” for his leadership in establishing quality public education in Texas.

Lamar was a member of the Masonic fraternity, known then, as it is today, for its strong support of excellence in public schools. The Mirabeau B. Lamar Award is presented to educators who embody a similar spirit toward public education.

As a longtime educator in Friendswood schools, “Pod,” as she is most affectionately known, is a dedicated community leader and educator. With Pod’s leadership and commitment to providing a quality and valuable public school experience, countless young Friendswood men and women have benefitted from her direction through the Friendswood High School Theatre Program.

Pod inspires young people to build confidence and tenacity while positively shaping their character. These impactful contributions personify the spirit of this prestigious award.

In addition to honoring Powdrell, Anson Jones Lodge will also present four $1000 scholarships to high school seniors who have exhibited academic excellence and community engagement.

These scholarships aim to support and encourage these students in their pursuit of higher education.

This year’s recipients are Jacob Mayfield and Ashley Wainscott from Friendswood High School, James Collins from Pearland High School, and Avery Marchino from Bethany High School in Bethany, Oklahoma.

Anson Jones Lodge remains committed to its core values of community service, education, and philanthropy. Through the presentation of the Mirabeau B. Lamar Award and the awarding of these scholarships, Anson Jones Lodge continues to acknowledge and reward those who strive to positively impact their communities.
