Friendswood City Center breaks ground

Date:

Tannos Development Group and Wolfgramm Capital broke ground on their new $750-million, 106-acre development on the former Whitcomb Property. The mixed-use project is expected to be completed within the next three to four years and will include a 500-unit apartment building, a luxury hotel, convention center, multiple retail sites, a hospital facility and park amenities.

Breaking ground alongside the company President, Louis Tannos, were a number of city officials including Mayor Mike Foreman, City Councilmembers Sally Branson, Robert Griffon, and Joe Matranga, and Galveston County Consolidated Drainage District Board Members Kevin Holland and Lonnie Moffit.

The development site, purchased from Clear Creek Community Church in February of 2023, sits on FM 528 from Townes Road to Brookside Intermediate School. The church originally sought to build an apartment complex on the property but was rebuffed by Friendswood’s City Council in 2015 while seeking necessary zoning changes.

The colossal undertaking is made possible in part thanks to a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone established by the City which creates a public-private partnership to encourage new development. A portion of new tax revenue will paid to the developers to recoup the extraordinary development costs.
