Area sites offer $15 paddling course

Date:

Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson and Galveston Island State Park are among five Texas locations offering a low-cost kayaking 101 course to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.

“Just one day of training can make the difference between setting yourself up for a bad experience that ruins the sport for you versus setting yourself up for a whole lifetime of paddling fun,” said Andrea White, Southeastern Chair of the American Canoe Association.

The course, which costs $15 per person, is being offered through a partnership with the ACA, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The course covers trip planning, equipment, posture, and boat control, as well as properly getting in and out of a kayak, emptying a swamped boat, paddling strokes, and towing a swimmer.

Registration for the class at any of the locations is available at tinyurl.com/TexasKayaking
