Friendswood teen publishes children’s book

Date:

Carrie Durso is unstoppable. Her recently published children’s book, “You’re Not Alone Little Zebra.”  inspired by her own experiences with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), is a beacon of hope and understanding for children facing chronic illnesses.

Durso was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a connective tissue disorder, at a young age. This condition, which affects the skin, joints, and blood vessels, often results in chronic pain and various other health issues. For Durso, the diagnosis came with both physical and emotional challenges. However, rather than letting her condition define her, Carrie channeled her experiences into a creative outlet.

In her book, “You’re Not Alone Little Zebra,” Carrie tells the story of a young zebra who feels different due to its unique stripes. This touching narrative not only highlights the struggles faced by those with chronic illnesses but also emphasizes the importance of acceptance and support. The zebra’s journey mirrors Carrie’s own, making the book a deeply personal and authentic depiction of living with EDS.

Carrie’s work has not gone unnoticed. Local news outlets such as KPRC2 and ABC7 have highlighted her achievements, showcasing her as a role model for young people everywhere. ABC7’s recent feature on Carrie delves into her life with EDS and her motivation behind writing the book. The piece highlights her resilience and determination, qualities that have endeared her to the Friendswood community and beyond.

Durso spoke about the importance of raising awareness for chronic illnesses and providing a voice for children who feel isolated because of their conditions. “I wanted to create a story that not only educates but also comforts those going through similar experiences,” Carrie said. “No one should feel alone in their journey.”

Durso’s advocacy doesn’t stop with her book. She crochets handmade stuffed zebras for children at the Texas Children’s Hospital who are dealing with chronic illnesses. Durso taught herself how to crochet while in the hospital for treatment.

Her journey is far from over, and with her passion for advocacy, she is sure to continue making a significant impact in the lives of many. Her book is more than just a story; it’s a message of hope and solidarity for all who face life’s challenges head-on.
