City OKs traffic camera purchases

Date:

The City of Pearland approved the purchase of 10 traffic cameras on July 22 to upgrade intersection signals.

“These cameras are used for vehicle detection,” City Manager Trent Epperson said. “We can also do traffic counts with these as well which helps with traffic studies.”

The cameras are traffic-related, but they are not red-light cameras, Mayor Kevin Cole pointed out.

“There’s no traffic enforcement off these cameras because that would be a violation of state law,” Cole said. “We can’t enforce traffic rules based on these cameras.”
