Bulbs for a Lifetime of Color will be presented at the next meeting of Heritage Gardeners on October 3 at their clubhouse at 112 W. Spreading Oaks in Friendswood.

Galveston County Master Gardener Fran Brockington will present what bulbs to plant now, how to maintain them, and which ones do well in this area.

Brockington inherited a love of gardening from her grandmother while growing up in South Carolina. When she moved to Texas, she found out how different growing zones affected what I planted. She learned about Texas native plants by volunteering at Armand Bayou Nature Center.

After retiring from the Early Childhood area job in 2018, she entered the Master Gardener program in Galveston County.

“I began researching and discovering which flower bulbs do well in our area. I’m enjoying passing on the knowledge about which bulbs survive our heat and rain and return year after year, such as crinums, varieties of lilies and amaryllis, and more,” Brockington said.

She is the team leader of the large bulb garden at the Master Gardener’s Discovery Garden, a research facility in Carbide Park in La Marque.

The Heritage Gardener meeting will begin at 9:30 am with Meet and Greet, and then Brockington will present at 10 am. Anyone interested in bulbs is invited to attend.

The club is working on its Annual Christmas Home Tour, Holiday Market, bakery, and raffles set for November 23 and 24, the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Limited space is still available for vendors for the holiday market. Contact Paula Oddo at paulaoddo@gmail.com for more information.
