Letter to the Editor: School Board

Date:

The upcoming school board election for FISD is an important one. With four board positions being contested by an aligned group of challengers, this election will determine the future of our District.

Tony Hopkins, Rebecca Hillenburg, Laura Seifert and Niki Rhodes are seeking re-election to continue their work which has placed FISD among the top school districts in Texas. During the 14 years I served on the FISD Board of Trustees through 2022, I witnessed, firsthand, the significant contributions each have made to our District.

However, you do not need to have served with Tony, Rebecca, Laura and Nikki to understand how hard they have worked for this District. You can easily see for yourself what they have helped FISD achieve. If you have not toured the schools recently, you should do so before you vote. The bond construction at the high school and Cline is simply incredible.

And this Board has a vision for future improvements to continue these significant upgrades to all our school buildings. Tony, Rebecca, Laura and Niki understand that improving our facilities is essential so that the children of this District are provided with every possible opportunity to reach their potential.

FISD’s success is not an accident. The accomplishments of FISD are a direct result of the hard work and leadership provided by this Board, our administration, teachers. staff and our FISD families. This team effort is what has placed us where we are. The need for FISD to remain an elite school district cannot be overstated.

FISD provides jobs for our community, educates and helps shape our children and plays a direct role in making our district in Friendswood a place where people want to live and raise their families. We need to continue our support for this team.

I am reminded of questions I used to hear while serving on the Board as to why our board members agreed with each other so often and got along so well. I was surprised at these questions because they seemed to infer that conflict was needed to reach a desired result.

But my answer was aways the same. We all had the same objective; “Do what is best for the Kids”. If that objective is in your heart when you serve, the path can appear quite clear.

do not know what the objectives are for the four challengers who are running together to “make changes”. But I do know, without question, that doing what is best for the kids is the objective each time Tony, Rebecca, Laura and Nikki make a decision for our District. I proudly support them for re-election and ask that you do so as well.
