Aggravated Assault Incident

Date:

On October 11, Friendswood Police Department (FPD) responded to an incident involving a violent suspect in the vicinity of Windsong Elementary. The situation unfolded around 3:00 p.m., when officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of N. Mission Circle following a report that a lawncare worker had stolen a leaf blower from a co-worker. During the confrontation, the suspect threatened the other worker with a hammer, prompting an immediate police response.
As the suspect fled on foot, FPD initiated a pursuit, during which the individual scaled fences and ran through residential yards. In light of the nearby pursuit and the safety of our students and staff, Windsong Elementary was placed on HOLD MODE at approximately 4:29 p.m. All exterior and interior doors were securely locked, and visitor access was restricted to ensure the safety of everyone on campus. Police officers used a K-9 and drones during the foot pursuit.
Due to the situation, dismissal procedures were affected, and bus transportation from other campuses experienced delays. The safety of our students is our top priority, and we appreciate the understanding of parents and guardians during this time.
At 4:25 p.m., after confirming that the suspect had been taken into custody in the 2100 block of San Miguel, all holds were released. Students were safely dismissed, and normal operations resumed.
We thank the community for their patience and support as we worked to resolve this incident swiftly and safely. The safety of our schools and neighborhoods remains a top priority for Friendswood Police Department.
The suspect, Kevin Ponce, 24, of Pasadena, was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Failure to Identity – Fugitive. Ponce had outstanding warrants in Dallas County for Auto Theft and Harris County for Criminal Trespass.
