Fund established for school hit by tornado

Date:

Alvin ISD Education Foundation has set up a donation site to help teachers at Disney Elementary replace lost classroom materials after the campus was struck by a tornado on Saturday.

The National Weather Service Houston-Galveston office reported an EF-2 tornado occurred Saturday along County Road 172 in rural Brazoria County into Hillcrest, with peak winds of 125 mph. The tornado began at approximately 1 p.m. and traveled roughly 9 miles. The tornado resulted in the death of a Brazoria County woman and injured five others.

The heaviest property damage happened at Disney Elementary, resulting in “serious damage to the majority of its roof structure,” the weather service reported.

Teachers and students in Alvin ISD are on winter break, with students set to return to classes Jan. 7. It is unclear where classes will be held for the coming semester, but the AISD Education Foundation is working to help teachers replace lost materials.

“This has been a difficult time for our educators, many of whom lost not only essential teaching materials but also personal items they purchased with their own funds to support their classrooms,” a statement from the foundation reads.

The site can be accessed at tinyurl.com/aisdrecoveryfund.

Five other tornadoes were reported in the Houston area on Saturday, including two rated as EF-3 in the Splendora-Montgomery County area and in Chambers County.
