State issues safety tips for boaters

Date:

Texas Game Wardens and Texas Parks and Wildlife issued reminders ahead of the Memorial Day holiday that children under 13 must wear life jackets when boating.

In addition, those planning a boating trip this summer are encouraged to leave a “float plan” with friends and family if they encounter trouble.

“Taking simple precautions like wearing a life jacket, can be the key to making it home safely,” said Cody Jones, Parks and Wildlife assistant commander for marine enforcement. “It’s a small step that can have a life-saving impact.”

In 2024, Texas reported 169 boating accidents and 24 fatalities, 22 of which were not wearing life jackets.

Jones cautioned against boating under the influence of alcohol or overloading vessels. Waterways will likely be crowded, and boaters should use caution in low water or near submerged objects.
