Pearland ISD parents may soon be able to limit subject matter of library books their children access at school.
“In the parent portal of (software provider) Follett Destiny, a parent can search the title, author or subject and it will pull all of the books, but for the parent to limit what their child can check out, they have to individually check each book, which can be tedious,” Superintendent Larry Berger explained during the December board meeting.
After meeting with the software company, district officials say they are working toward an option that would allow parents to “select all” under various types of subject matter.
“That way, a parent or guardian can go through and type the subject, for example, ‘I don’t want my child to read any books about murder.’ They could type ‘murder,’ it will pull up all the books, and they can just select all,” Berger said. “Then they will have better transparency and control over what their child is reading.”
More details about the streamlined parent portal are expected to be available next month.
After being posted for 30 days for the community with no objections, a list of library book purchases was approved by the board at the December meeting.
