Friendswood ISD Sees Positive Progress in Average Daily Attendance https://myreporternews.com/2025/01/21/friendswood-isd-sees-positive-progress-in-average-daily-attendance/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 21:30:51 +0000 https://myreporternews.com/?p=44769 Friendswood ISD (FISD) is celebrating significant progress in improving Average Daily Attendance (ADA) during the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year. All campuses in the district reported increases in attendance rates, ranging from 1 to 2 percent compared to last year, highlighting the district’s commitment to ensuring students are present, engaged, and achieving success.
The increase in ADA directly impacts the district’s funding from the State of Texas. For each 1 percent increase in attendance, FISD receives approximately $500,000 in additional funding. These funds are critical for supporting student programs, maintaining quality facilities, and providing resources for a high-quality education.
“Our focus on improving attendance is about more than just numbers — it’s about investing in our students’ futures,” FISD Superintendent Thad Roher said. “When students are in school, they have greater academic success, experience improved social-emotional well-being, and develop the skills necessary to succeed in adulthood.”
Research shows consistent school attendance leads to better academic outcomes, stronger social connections, and increased employability. FISD is committed to fostering a culture of attendance across all campuses by partnering with parents, staff, and students.
The district has implemented various initiatives to promote attendance, including campus presentations, social media campaigns, and personalized outreach efforts. These strategies emphasize the importance of being present at school and its long-term benefits to students and the community.
“We are grateful for the support of our families and staff in prioritizing attendance,” Roher added. “This progress is a testament to our community’s dedication to student success.”
FISD remains focused on maintaining this positive momentum throughout the school year. As attendance continues to improve, the district will ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Friendswood ISD’s Theatre Education Program Receives State Recognition https://myreporternews.com/2025/01/21/friendswood-isds-theatre-education-program-receives-state-recognition/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 21:23:23 +0000 https://myreporternews.com/?p=44766 By Friendswood ISD Communication Department

Friendswood ISD (FISD) has earned the Texas Thespians Premier Communities for Theatre Education Award. This program recognizes and honors school districts that provide theatre programs with the resources to achieve above standard, rooted in the Educational Theatre Association’s Opportunity to Learn Standards, Texas Theatre Knowledge and Skills for Fine Arts (TEKS), and support of International Thespian Society Troupe involvement.
To qualify for the Texas Thespians Premiere Communities for Theatre Education Award, FISD answered detailed questions about curriculum, scheduling standards, class sizes, facilities, theatre safety, technical equipment, production elements, overall support for the theatre program, and Thespian troupe involvement. Responses were verified and reviewed by Texas Theatre Education specialists.
Research on theatre education demonstrates numerous educational benefits across student populations, age levels, and learning environments. Theatre education provides several social benefits, including teamwork skills, giving and receiving constructive criticism, problem-solving, trust, cooperation, and collaboration. Additionally, theatre education helps students develop a strong sense of self, build empathy and understanding amongst peers, and broaden their knowledge of the world around them while preparing them for future careers.
“I am so honored that Friendswood was recognized by Texas Thespians as a Premier Community for Theatre in Texas,” Friendswood High School Theatre Director Kathy Powdrell said. “Congratulations to our team, which includes Faith Mendoza, Nancy Burke, Mason Patterson and Amy Thornton.”

School Counselors Honored with 2024 CREST Award https://myreporternews.com/2025/01/21/school-counselors-honored-with-2024-crest-award/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 21:18:06 +0000 https://myreporternews.com/?p=44758 Lupita Zavala (Hood-Case Elementary), Rita Pourchot (Mark Twain Elementary), and Lauren Johns & Liliana Moreno (Harby Jr. High School) have been recognized as recipients of the 2024 Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST) award. These distinguished school counselors join an elite group of educators from across the state who exemplify excellence in their profession.

The CREST award, sponsored by the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA), honors schools that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling. This model focuses on fostering student achievement and personal growth in academic, career, and social-emotional domains.

“I take pride in being a professional school counselor and am honored to work beside some of the best counselors in Texas. It has always been important to me to have a comprehensive school counseling program that meets the needs of our students that is supported by data, allows collaboration with stakeholders, and is aligned with our district goals,” shared Lauren Johns, Harby Jr. High Counselor.

To earn the CREST designation, counselors submitted applications featuring five in-depth sections detailing their campus counseling programs’ design, implementation, and impact. These applications were rigorously evaluated by the TSCA CREST evaluation team using a detailed scoring rubric.

“School counselors have always worked in the background to ensure all of the key components to student success are in place,” shared Amber Dixon, District Coordinator of Guidance and Counseling. “Winning the CREST Award provides a wonderful acknowledgment and visual representation of what that background work entails. It’s such an honor to work alongside such dedicated school counselors!”

Winners will be formally recognized during the annual TSCA conference on February 2 at the Galveston Convention Center, where they will receive their official awards and banners.
