Cigarette Litter Awareness Day was held recently in Pearland by Keep Pearland Beautiful as part of their Cigarette Litter Prevention Program.
This year 148 volunteers worked a total of 142 volunteer hours at 20 Pearland intersections to pick up litter from smokers.
The volunteers picked up 11, 460 cigarette butts and three vapes. According to KPB, cigarette butts are not biodegradable. A study found that a cigarette butt was only 38 percent decomposed after two years.
Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) is the nation’s largest program aimed at eliminating cigarette litter.
Since 2005, KPB volunteers have collected over 200,000 cigarette butts in Pearland intersections. Since 2018, KPB volunteers have collected 11 e-cigarettes/vapes.
KPB is a 501 (c )3 non profit organization that was started in 1982 in Pearland. KPB is responsible for citywide cleanup efforts as well as providing educational outreach to area schools in Pearland and Alvin ISDs.
Since 2016, KPB has operated the Stella Roberts Recycling Center which regularly serves 30+ cities in four counties and processes over 900 tons of recycling each and every year.
