Alvin ISD to look at school boundaries

Date:

With new subdivisions underway and some schools reaching capacity, Alvin ISD will hear recommendations about campus attendance boundaries before the end of the year.

The school district, which serves the western portion of Pearland near Highway 288, recently appointed a committee to develop campus boundary recommendations. That committee is set to give input to the school board on Nov. 14 and give final recommendations for board approval on Dec. 12.

Alvin ISD is expected to grow by 600 students each year for the next few years before growth inches up again, according to a recent report from Zonda Demographics.

“The housing market got kind of wonky there for a little while; now it’s kind of taken off again,”

Rocky Gardiner of Zonda Demographics told the school board on Oct. 10.
The district currently has an enrollment of just under 30,000. With 60 actively building subdivisions, Alvin ISD ranks No. 7 among home closings in Houston area school districts.

In the Pearland area, the permanent buildings of McNair Junior High and Shadow Creek High School are at capacity, the report states, but Alvin High School is over capacity.

Zonda’s research also takes into account students who transfer from public schools to private or charter schools.

“We can’t track homeschooling, but we can track charters because they are part of TEA,” Gardiner said.
