Holiday Horror: shooting leaves one teen dead, another in critical condition

Date:

A chilling incident shattered the peace on the evening of December 23rd. At approximately 8:51 p.m., Friendswood Police were summoned to the Mission Estates neighborhood following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered two young men, 18-year-old Ethan Riley and 19-year-old Ben Bliek, suffering from gunshot injuries.

Tragically, Riley succumbed to his wounds the following day, while Bliek continues to fight for his life in critical condition at a local hospital. Amidst the chaos, another individual, a 15-year-old teenager, was also present at the scene but miraculously escaped unharmed.
In connection with the shooting, 17-year-old Connor Hilton was swiftly apprehended and faced charges of aggravated assault, as per the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.
Despite posting bail and being released on Christmas Eve on a $1 million bond, the subsequent death of Ethan Riley escalated the charges against Hilton.

The District Attorney’s Office revised the charges to include murder, leading to Hilton’s re-arrest on December 25th in a dramatic operation involving Friendswood Police officers clad in tactical gear.

This incident marks a rare and shocking occurrence in Friendswood, known for its tranquility and low crime rate. It is only the second murder to disrupt the community this year and one of the few in the last two decades, with previous instances occurring in 2015 and 2008.

The severity of the crime and its impact on the quiet suburban life of Friendswood residents have left the community in a state of mourning.
