Pearland area campuses are among dozens of Houston area high schools staging an annual full-length musical early in 2024, many eyeing the coveted Theater Under the Star’s annual Tommy Tune awards.

Pearland High theater students will stage Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” beginning at 7 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 26, at the campus Ovation Theatre, 3777 South Main St. Saturday shows are 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. both Jan. 27 and Feb. 3. More evening performances are 7 p.m. Feb. 2 and 3.

Dawson High School opened its 2024 musical, “Hairspray,” on Jan. 19, and shows continue at 7 p.m. this Friday and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 27, in the Dawson High auditorium, 2050 Cullen Blvd.

Tickets for both shows are $10 for adults and $7 for students, seniors, and staff, and $12 for premium seating.

Alvin ISD’s Shadow Creek High wrapped its production, “In the Heights,” last weekend.

Friendswood High in Friendswood ISD will open its 56th annual musical, Lerner and Loewe’s “Brigadoon,” at 7 p.m. this Friday, with shows continuing through Feb. 4 at Friendswood Junior High, 1000 Manison Parkway, Friendswood. Tickets are $15.

Named for Tony-award-winning Houston native Tommy Tune, the annual awards bestowed by TUTS last year honored Stratford High in Spring Branch ISD and GW Carver High in Aldine ISD with outstanding musical awards.
Presented in 17 categories, the awards are typically presented in May at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
