Montz home on Heritage Gardeners Tour

Date:

By Karolyn Gephart

The private gardens and yard of local dentist, Dr. David Montz will be on the Heritage Gardener Spring Garden Tour April 27-28. He is honoring his late wife Kim with the theme of Kim’s Paradise: Soaring with Eagles.

Kim loved gardening and putting their yard on the tour lets the community see the trees and areas she planted and loved.

The Montz’s are the original owners of the large 2-acre property. They designed their 7,500 sq. ft. home, which was built in 2015. The lot was previously undeveloped and had a small barn for horses.

The three main areas on the tour include the pool area, surrounding shade area, and treed backyard with firepit and seating.

The sideyard has a Jerusalem thorn tree, Japanese red maple, shrub roses, crinum lilies, ajuga ground cover, ferns, daylilies, Rangoon creeper, and a Japanese aralia, adding a tropical touch to the corner.

A Chinese fringe tree is in the front yard. Annual color has also been placed throughout areas of the yard.

The gardens of David Montz is one of five gardens on the tour this year. Tour hours are Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, from 1 to 5 pm.

Tickets are available at local businesses in Friendswood and the Chamber of Commerce. On the tour dates, tickets will be available at the Heritage Gardener clubhouse at 112 W. Spreading Oaks in Friendswood.

The annual garden club spring event will also offer a huge Plant Sale, Spring Vendor Market, Ask a Master Gardener opportunities to solve garden problems, raffles, and three gardening presentations inside the clubhouse on Saturday.

Creating a Pollinator Garden by Master Gardener Chris Anastas will occur from 9 to 9:30 am.

Growing Fruit in Your Backyard will be presented by Fruit Specialist Robert Marshall from 10 to 11 am.

Successfully Growing Plumeria will be presented by Master Gardener Loretta Osteen from 11:30 to 12:30.

Anyone interested is invited to attend. There is no pre-registration for the three events.
All events other than the tours will take place at 112 W. Spreading Oaks in Friendswood. Only the tour requires tickets to attend.
