Pearland Police say the Aug. 28 death of a 14-year-old trying to cross the southbound lanes of Highway 288 on foot is still under investigation.

The boy had been fleeing from the scene of a crash after a vehicle pursuit by police in the 14000 block of Highway 288 northbound, according to a release from the police department.

“The driver of the vehicle, later identified as a 14-year-old male, lost control of the vehicle and collided with the center concrete barrier,” the release states. “Following the crash, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle fled on foot, running westbound across the main lanes of State Highway 288, including the HOV lane.”

About five minutes after the officer lost sight of the boy, emergency dispatch began receiving calls about an auto-pedestrian accident in the southbound lanes.

“Officers responded to the scene and discovered that the individual who had fled the earlier crash had been struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the southbound lanes,” the police release states.

Police administered CPR, and the boy was taken by ambulance to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are asking for anything with information about this incident to contact the Pearland Police Department at 281-997-4100.
