Incumbent for Board of Trustees Position 3: Rebecca Hillenburg

Date:

Rebecca Hillenburg

What are your campaign focuses?

My campaign focuses are on maintaining the district’s strong financial position, managing budget restraints, and ensuring the continual enhancement of educational opportunities, including Standards-Based Learning (SBL) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. These eCorts are all aimed at preparing students for future success, whether they choose work, college, or the military. Along the way I would like to tell the voters who I am, and share my story, my goals and my hopes for the future of the district. Please go to drh4fisd.com to learn more. You may also find information on the Friendswood Chamber of Commerce website who is sponsoring the candidate forum on October 3 at Windsong.

Do you have children or grandchildren in the FISD system?

Both my son and daughter-in-law are proud graduates of FISD, and I currently have two grandchildren attending schools in the district. My personal connection to the district, both as an educator and a family member, gives me a deep understanding of the needs and expectations of our community, and strengthens my commitment to ensuring FISD remains a place where all students can succeed.

What is your perspective on Standards-Based Learning (SBL)?

Standards-Based Learning (SBL) has proven to be highly eCective for our students. By focusing on mastering specific skills and concepts, SBL ensures that students receive the individualized attention they need to truly understand the material. Introduced through a second-grade pilot program five years ago, SBL has gradually expanded and continues to enhance learning across multiple grades. This approach prevents students from simply moving along through the curriculum without fully grasping the content. Much like Individual Education Plans (IEPs), SBL helps every learner succeed by tailoring instruction to their unique needs.

What is your perspective on the current learning reassessment policy?

The current reassessment policy aligns with the principles of Standards-Based Learning (SBL), ensuring that students truly grasp the material before moving on. The key to this system is learning! This system prioritizes mastery over memorization and allows for students to demonstrate their understanding through reassessment, reinforcing the belief that education should be about real learning, not simply passing exams. It’s true that at times it may be more work for the teacher, yes, but the benefits for the student are proven. Understanding the material and retaining are the long-term goals.

What are your opinions on current teacher workload and pay?

Having been in the classroom for fourteen years, I can speak directly to this. Teachers are underpaid for their eCorts and for some the workload can be overwhelming at times. Our teachers are valued beyond belief. Ways in which the district can demonstrate their value is paramount to the team and administration. Teacher retention and satisfaction are critical. I believe that we need to recognize and value our teachers for the essential work they do, through competitive pay and providing a supportive environment. By surveying teachers yearly, we understand their individual needs and create a system that nurtures their growth and helps retain the best talent in FISD.

What specific parts of the current FISD system are you hoping to change?

Moving FISD forward is the way I think of change. The Board of Trustees are involved in evaluating every department, building safety and learning process. This enables us, as a board, to set policy and move forward. I would like to continue refining and expanding Standards-Based Learning (SBL) to make education more personalized and eCective for all students. I also support the ongoing development of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, as they provide critical pathways for students who may not be pursuing traditional college routes. Ensuring that these programs are accessible and well-supported will continue to be a priority. Moving forward and propelling our students toward a brighter future!

What is your position on current bond initiatives for facility improvements?

The future of our schools’ rests in the hands of the voters, and their choices shape the district’s success. Bonds play a crucial role in maintaining the high standards of education and infrastructure that our community values. I am always open to listening to our superintendent, principals, and committees to garner input for the next steps. Their expertise and insights help guide these discussions, but ultimately, the Friendswood community decides whether a bond passes and whether these improvements take place. Investing strategically in our district’s future is vital, it is also essential to remain mindful of budget limitations and keep the community educated throughout the process.
