Avian flu cases found on coast

The National Veterinary Services Laboratories on December 20 announced that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza appears to be circulating among wild birds in Texas, with the most recent detections in Wharton, Galveston, and Harris counties.

Detected all over the U.S., the highly contagious virus transmits efficiently among wild and domestic birds and can spread directly between animals and indirectly through environmental contamination.

To help prevent the spread of the virus, the public is asked to limit any unnecessary contact with wild birds. Bird feeders and water sources should be cleaned at least every two weeks with one part bleach to nine parts water. Change water in birdbaths every few days and regularly remove wet feed and seed from feed.

Hunters are asked to dispose of carcasses properly and wear gloves when processing, cleaning, and disinfecting tools.
