DMV warns of texting scam

Date:

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles is warning cellphone users not to click on links within text messages that appear to be from the DMV or other agencies alleging toll violations or nonpayment of traffic tickets.
The texts often threaten immediate prosecution, suspension of vehicle registration or loss of driving privileges, and include a link urging recipients to pay fines immediately to avoid further penalties. The links are scams designed to steal personal and financial information.
Instead of clicking the link, users are encouraged not to reply, and to report the message to the FBI’s Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov or to the Federal Trade Commission at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov
