Wedgewood students take over City Hall

Date:

The Friendswood City Council chambers looked a little different Monday night, not only because the meeting was held in an alternate location, but also because a group of Wedgewood Elementary second graders took over the dais for the city’s “Council for a Day” program.

The annual event gives local students a hands-on opportunity to learn how city government works by stepping into the roles of City Council members and city staff for a mock meeting. Because City Hall is currently undergoing renovations, this year’s meeting was held in the Friendswood ISD Board Room.

After taking their places on the dais, the second graders followed proper procedure to review, discuss, and vote on a proclamation declaring October 6, 2025, as Wedgewood Elementary School Day in the City of Friendswood.

Serving in their respective roles were Samantha Estrada as Mayor, Tyler Murphy as Position 1, Emerie Hernandez as Position 2, Ashton Barrentine as Position 3, Alfonso Sifuentes as Position 4, Laura Navarro as Position 5, Rayce Adams as Position 6, Mayleigh Cooke as City Secretary, and Jason David as City Manager.

The following day, the students, accompanied by Mayor Mike Foreman, presented the official proclamation to their classmates during a schoolwide assembly at Wedgewood Elementary.

City officials praised the students for their enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the evening, noting that the “Council for a Day” program offers young residents a unique opportunity to experience public service and civic leadership in action. “Great job, Wedgewood!” the city said in a statement.
