Friendswood votes “No” on school bonds

Date:

Friendswood voters have decided against all four bond propositions put forward by Friendswood ISD, with each measure falling short at the polls. Election results show clear margins of defeat across all propositions, concluding several weeks of debate online and in the community over district spending priorities, facility needs, and long-term planning.

Proposition A, the largest of the four bond items, sought authorization for $154.75 million in funding to construct new facilities, including a new building for Westwood Elementary and a new agriculture science center. The measure was rejected 3,957 to 2,562, with 60.7% voting against.

Proposition B would have allocated $2 million for district technology equipment. It failed 3,788 to 2,706 (58.3% against). Proposition C, which asked voters to approve $4.25 million for improvements to athletic facilities, saw the widest margin of defeat—66.3% voted against the measure, with the final tally at 4,306 to 2,192. Proposition D, requesting approval to refinance $4 million in maintenance tax notes, was rejected 3,997 to 2,481 (61.7% against).

Turnout was notably higher than typical local elections, with voter participation exceeding 25% in nearly every Friendswood precinct.

The district has not yet announced a timeline for possible revisions or future proposals. School officials are expected to review election feedback and begin discussions on next steps in the coming weeks, as Friendswood ISD continues to navigate aging facility needs, enrollment trends, and long-term capital planning amidst a community that remains divided over spending and prioritization.
