The Sons of the Republic of Texas (SRT) have officially opened the submission period for the 2025–2026 Texas History Essay Contest, inviting graduating high school seniors across Texas—including homeschool students—to participate. The annual contest awards thousands of dollars in scholarship funds and encourages students to explore the rich and complex history of early Texas.
Winners will be announced and recognized during the San Jacinto Day observance on April 21, 2026, traditionally held on the steps of the San Jacinto Monument. Scholarship awards include $4,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place, and $2,000 for third place.
The purpose of the statewide contest is to promote a deeper understanding of Texas’ frontier past, highlighting the perseverance and ingenuity of early Texans who shaped the state under difficult conditions. Organizers hope the competition will spark an interest in historical research, encourage continued education, and inspire students to reflect on their own role in the state’s future.
This year’s essay topic offers students a broader creative focus than in previous years. Rather than spotlighting a single historical figure or event, the 2025–2026 prompt invites students to explore “Tejano Heroes in Revolt for Texas Independence.”
Entries will undergo a blind review process, with identifying information removed before evaluation by SRT members. Finalist essays will then be reviewed by a panel at Sam Houston State University, where they will also be screened for plagiarism and the use of artificial intelligence. Judges will look for essays that demonstrate strong research, historical accuracy, thoughtful analysis, and engaging writing—not book reports, but well-crafted historical narratives.
Students must submit their entries by January 31, 2026, and SRT leaders encourage early preparation due to the expected statewide interest.
Complete contest guidelines and entry details can be found at www.srttexas.org under the Community tab.
The SRT is an organization dedicated to preserving the memory and spirit of those who fought for and maintained Texas’ independence. Membership is open to male descendants of residents of the Republic of Texas. More information is available at www.srttexas.org.
