HLSR announces landmark facility off 288

Date:

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Wednesday announced plans for a 1-million-square-foot livestock and agricultural complex on Highway 288 at 1901 Airport Blvd.

The site is between Reed Road an Airport Blvd. off 288.

Construction is expected to take several years, with expected opening for the 2029 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. A groundbreaking is slated for late this year.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will remain at Reliant Park, rodeo officials said, while the new complex will complement existing operations, hosting horse show competitions, some livestock shows, junior and open breeding shows, archery competitions, agricultural mechanics, commercial auctions and educational contests, including 4-H and intercollegiate programming.

“For more than two decades Reliant Arena has been at the heart of our horse and livestock show operations,” said Wesley Sinor, chairman of the board of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “But as the facility where we host many of these events has reached the end of its useful life, it’s been clear that we need to act. This investment is a commitment to our students, our exhibitors and the future of agriculture. It’s required us to look ahead to our centennial and beyond to ensure we are meeting that responsibility for generations to come.”

In the off-season, the facility will support educational programming, committee meetings, fundraisers, auctions and galas.
