Work is set to begin in September to repave five of Pearland’s roughest streets through a city-county partnership.
Through a longstanding interlocal agreement, the City of Pearland furnishes materials and Brazoria County provides labor and equipment for the annual project on a select number of Pearland Streets each year.
“We use our pavement condition index to guide which roads we include in this program,” City Manager Trent Epperson said.
Streets selected for asphalt paving this year are: Garden Road from Broadway to the city limits; Fite Road from Harkey to McLean; Walnut Street from Old Alvin to Broadway; Hawk Road from Cullen Road to Norfolk; and Hillhouse Road from Hughes Ranch north to its dead end.
Since Hillhouse and Hawk both run beside Dawson High School and the start of school is approaching, the work on those streets likely won’t begin until the Thanksgiving Break, according to Eric Hammond, assistant director of Public Works.
“We’re trying to align our schedule with the county and the school break,” he said.
The cooperative with the county has been in place for decades, Mayor Kevin Cole said.
“It’s your tax dollars, your road and bridge dollars that you pay when you renew your vehicle that goes to the county and coming back into the city to help with certain roadways,” he said. “This year looks like double the lane miles we had last year.”
