Dawson may have begun the season 0-3 while dropping two of the early games by a single point in two non-district games, but head coach Mike Allison knows the real season began when they began playing in the district.
With one game remaining in the regular season, Dawson is now 5-4 overall and 4-1 in district and in a three-way tie for first place with Pearland and Shadow Creek.
The final game will be against district foe Alvin, who is 2-7 overall and 0-6 in the district. So, it is safe to say that the Eagles should get an easy win to finish the regular season at 6-4 while advancing to the Class 6A Region III Div. II playoffs.
The Dawson defense took control of the entire game as the Eagles allowed only 119 total yards (15 yards rushing, 114 yards passing) and no points.
Meanwhile, the Eagles offense had 370 total yards (216 yards rushing, 154 yards passing) while scoring four times.
Dawson opened up the scoring in the first quarter on a 3-yard scoring run by Tony Roberson III for a 6-0 lead after Aaron Jensen missed the PAT.
The Eagles added another score in the second quarter when QB Gage Greene tossed a 4-yard scoring pass to WR Noah Rhodes to make the score 14-0 following a successful two-point conversion on a QB keeper by Greene.
The third quarter saw two more scores by Dawson when senior RB Bryce Burgess scored on a 3-yard run, and later in the period, Burgess found the end zone again — this time on a 56-yard scoring jaunt. Jensen hit one PAT, and Ayden Treadaway added the second PAT to post the 28-0 final score.
Greene was 14-of-23 passing for 148 yards and one score.
Bryce Burgess led the ground attack with 17 carries for 189 yards and two TDs while he caught two passes for 18 yards.
Rhodes led all receivers with five catches for 66 yards and one TD. Roberson had five grabs for 30 yards, and Braylon Howard had five receptions for 31 yards.
The Eagles play their final game of the regular season against the Alvin Yellowjackets on Thursday, November 2, at 7:00 p.m. at Pearland ISD Stadium.
