On Saturday, May 4th, Friendswood held its local elections with a modest turnout of just under 1,800 voters, reflecting a quiet election day with several unopposed candidacies and some significant changes on the Galveston County Consolidated Drainage District Board.
Mayor Mike Foreman sailed through an unopposed bid for re-election, maintaining his position without contest. Similarly, City Councilwoman Trish Hanks retained her seat, also without opposition. Joining the unchallenged incumbents, newcomer and former judge John Ellisor secured his spot on the City Council, facing no opponents in his electoral debut.
However, the Galveston County Consolidated Drainage District Board saw more action, with all three contested positions resulting in changes. In a notable shift, incumbent Kevin Holland was unseated by David Johnson in a vote of 905 to 771 for Position 1.
The race for Position 2 was tightly contested; Jason Jones narrowly surpassed incumbent Theresa Gustafson by a mere 62 votes.
Position 5 also witnessed a change in leadership, with Kimberly Girouard defeating incumbent Lonnie Moffitt, 944 to 777.
All three newcomers ran on a platform of reduced spending on drainage projects and easing the tax burden on property owners.
Meanwhile, voters overwhelmingly supported the renewal of the 3/8 of a cent sales tax dedicated to street maintenance. The measure passed with 76.42% approval, ensuring continued funding for the upkeep and improvement of city streets.
