SNAP approved for hot food purchases

Date:

Texas Health and Human Services received federal approval to allow SNAP recipients in counties affected by Hurricane Beryl to use their benefits to purchase hot foods.

SNAP recipients do not need to take action to receive the additional benefit, which is approved through Aug. 14 at participating retailers in 36 Texas counties, including Brazoria, Fort Bend, Harris, and Galveston counties.

“The ability to purchase hot food is a necessity for SNAP recipients who are still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Beryl,” said HHSC Deputy Executive Commissioner of Access and Eligibility Services Molly Regan. “Many families still cannot prepare meals due to power outages.”

Hot foods include rotisserie chicken, grocery store deli items, and other hot food at the point of sale.

Any Texan in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid, at YourTexasBenefits.com or by using the Your Texas Benefits mobile app to manage benefits. To find local resources, such as food or shelter, dial 2-1-1 and select Option 1.
