Pearland city leaders this month set their priorities for the upcoming Texas legislature, which include local control, safety, job and economic growth, increasing efficiency, and reducing waste.
The city’s adopted priorities are referred to when meeting with representatives. During the Feb. 23-25 Brazoria County Days in Austin, Feb. 2627 Pearland Days in Austin, and emphasized during the legislative session that opened this week and runs through June 2.
“Another date to be aware of is that 60-day deadline for bill filing, which is March 14,”
Special projects administrator Joel Hardy. “There will be lots of bills filed. We anticipate this being a very active legislative session.”
Key concerns are bills that remove or reduce local authority, including the city’s property or sales tax collection parameters, financial management and budget practices, land use control, economic development, safety, or other areas.
“There could be any number of bills we would be in favor of and some we may not be,” Mayor Kevin Cole said. “There are a couple of bills we know some of these representatives have filed already. These meetings are to set our priorites about what we want to see.”
