Seamus and Bronson Holland Named Mayors for the Day

Date:

On July 16th, Seamus and Bronson Holland were granted the unique opportunity to serve as the City of Friendswood’s Mayors for the Day. The two young brothers spent the day shadowing current Mayor Mike and learning about the inner workings of their local government. Seamus, 6 years old and soon to be a first grader, eagerly announced that his first order of business would be to “make everything free on your birthday,” a wish that surely captured the attention of everyone present. His older brother, 8-year-old Bronson, who is preparing to enter the third grade, took a more reflective approach to his duties. After thinking for a moment, Bronson suggested a plan to build a motocross track for dirt bikes, a proposal that clearly shows his adventurous spirit.

The day’s itinerary was packed with activities designed to offer the boys a well-rounded view of the city’s operations. Their adventure began with a visit to City Hall, where they had the chance to meet with Mayor Mike and tour the various departments. Afterward, they visited the Friendswood Library, where they learned about the services and programs offered to the community. The young mayors also toured the Friendswood Police Department and Fire Station, getting an up-close look at how these critical public services work together to keep the city safe.

They wrapped up the day by joining Mayor Mike for a meal at Perry’s, where they were able to discuss their ideas and learn more about the responsibilities of local leadership. Seamus and Bronson were not only able to make a memorable impact on the day, but they also gained a deeper understanding of how their community operates and the important role that local government plays.

The Mayor for a Day experience, which was introduced by Mayor Mike in 2018, gives local children the chance to step into the shoes of community leaders, providing a fun and educational experience while also raising funds for a good cause. This month’s Mayor for a Day was made possible thanks to the generosity of Seamus and Bronson’s grandfather, Former Mayor Kevin Holland, who made a substantial donation at the Library Gala Live Auction.

The Mayor for a Day program has become a cherished tradition in Friendswood, offering local children the opportunity to experience leadership in action while contributing to a meaningful cause. The funds raised through this program go directly to organizations like the Friendswood Library and the Education Foundation, supporting educational resources and programs for the community.

This unique opportunity will once again be available in February at the FISD Education Foundation Gala, where community members will have the chance to bid for the chance to make their child “Mayor for a Day.” The auction not only provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience for one lucky child, but it also helps support education in Friendswood, continuing the tradition of enhancing local educational programs and resources for future generations.
