Education Foundation funds ‘Blooms & Bites’ Legacy Grant

Date:

Friendswood High School students in the culinary arts and floral design programs will soon be taking their learning beyond the classroom thanks to a new delivery vehicle funded through a Friendswood ISD Education Foundation Legacy Grant.

Foundation representatives recently took delivery of the new “Blooms & Bites” van, a collaborative project developed by Friendswood High School’s culinary and agriculture teachers. The grant-funded vehicle will allow students to transport catered meals, floral arrangements and event supplies while gaining valuable real-world business experience.

The Blooms & Bites initiative combines the talents of students enrolled in culinary arts and floral design courses. Working together, students will prepare catered meals, create floral arrangements, deliver products to customers, and experience many of the responsibilities involved in operating a small business.

Rather than limiting instruction to classroom lessons, the program is designed to immerse students in authentic, hands-on learning. From preparing food and designing floral displays to making deliveries and interacting with customers, students will gain practical experience in customer service, logistics, event planning and entrepreneurship.

“This collaborative grant was envisioned by our culinary and floral design teachers to expand their programs and give students authentic, hands-on learning experiences beyond the classroom,” the Friendswood ISD Education Foundation said in announcing the vehicle’s arrival.

Superintendent Thad Roher said the project represents an exciting new opportunity for Friendswood students.

“Thanks to McRee Ford and Molly and Dain Crow as well as the FISD Education Foundation, our culinary and floral design teachers picked up the Blooms & Bites van today that will be used to deliver student-produced catering and floral projects to work sites,” Roher said. “This was a Legacy Grant they put together and was funded.”

Roher also shared the reaction of culinary arts teacher Melissa Novak, who summed up the impact of the new vehicle in just a few words.

“This is a game changer for our kids.”

The Education Foundation also recognized McRee Ford, along with Molly and Dain Crow, for their partnership in helping bring the project to life.

“A special thank you to Molly Crow and the entire McRee Ford team for their incredible partnership in bringing this vision to life,” the foundation said. “We are so grateful for your support.”

The project was funded through one of the Education Foundation’s Legacy Grants, which support larger, transformative educational initiatives across the district. Unlike traditional classroom grants, Legacy Grants provide funding for projects with the potential to make a lasting impact on student learning and career readiness.

Legacy Grants are made possible through the Friendswood ISD Education Foundation Endowment, supported by members of the organization’s Century Club, whose contributions help fund innovative educational opportunities for Friendswood students.

By combining culinary arts, agriculture and entrepreneurship into a single venture, Blooms & Bites is expected to give students a competitive advantage as they prepare for careers in hospitality, event planning, floral design, business management and other industries where technical skills and customer service go hand in hand.

With the new van now in service, Friendswood High School students will soon be taking their talents beyond campus—delivering not only meals and floral arrangements, but also the results of an innovative educational partnership designed to prepare them for success after graduation.
