Galveston County property owners should begin receiving their 2026 property tax statements following the mailing of more than 135,000 notices last week, according to County Tax Assessor-Collector Cheryl E. Johnson.
Property owners have several payment options, including paying their taxes in full by Feb. 1, 2027, or taking advantage of installment plans available to eligible taxpayers.
Residents who choose the county’s half-payment option must make their first payment by Nov. 30, 2026, with the remaining balance due June 30, 2027.
Certain property owners, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, disabled veterans and those affected by a governor-declared disaster, may qualify to pay their taxes in four equal installments. Under that option, payments are due Feb. 1, March 31, June 1 and Aug. 2, 2027.
Johnson noted that property owners whose mortgage companies collect and pay property taxes through escrow accounts will not receive mailed tax statements.
Taxpayers can make payments online at www.galcotax.com, by telephone, through the mail or in person at county tax offices.
Online payments made by electronic check carry a 50-cent bank fee, while credit and debit card payments are subject to a 2.2% processing fee. Telephone payments can be made by calling 1-800-420-1663, with applicable bank fees.
Residents mailing payments should ensure their envelopes receive a timely U.S. Postal Service postmark. Johnson advised taxpayers to deposit payments in a USPS mailbox before the final collection time, typically 5 p.m., to avoid missing a deadline.
Payments can also be deposited in yellow drop boxes outside the county’s full-time tax offices. Payments placed in those boxes before 8 a.m. Dec. 1 will be recorded as received Nov. 30, allowing taxpayers to meet the first half-payment deadline.
