The Turtles Are Back!

Date:

The Alvin ISD Education Foundation will host the 20th Annual Turtle Race on Saturday, February 8 at National Oak Park in Alvin. This year, Chocolate Bayou Community Federal Credit Union, is the title sponsor for the Turtle Race. The day starts at 8:30 a.m. with the 8th Annual Kids 1K Fun Run/Walk, followed at 9:00 am by the 5K Family Fun Run/Walk.

Gold Sponsors this year are Kelsey Seybold and BSN Sports. Imagine Learning, Community Impact Newspaper and PerdueBrandonFielderCollins & Mott, LLP are Event Sponsors, while TDEC, Inc. is the Advertising Sponsor, HomeTown Bank is the Finish Line Sponsor and The Original Ron Carter is the Medal Sponsor. Silver Sponsor is PBK, Inc.

Bronze Sponsors are Texas Advantage Community Bank, Senator Larry Taylor, Meridiana, Alvin Noon Lions Club, Memorial Hermann, Alvin ATPE and EZ Line Pipe Support Co., LLC. There are many other generous donors that help make the event a success.

The Turtle Race starts at 12 noon. Community members, parents, students and staff are invited to adopt turtles for $5 each. All proceeds from the Turtle Race benefit the students and teachers in the Alvin ISD through Innovative Teaching Grants, campus grants, and scholarships for students, teachers and paraprofessionals. Turtle adoption forms are available at all Alvin ISD campuses, the Alvin ISD Tommy King Central Administration Building, as well as online at www.alvinisd.net/educationfoundation.

The day of the Turtle Race the adopted turtles are taken to Mustang Bayou and dropped from the bridge along the Tom Blakeney Hike and Bike Trail. The turtles “race” down the bayou to the finish line near the bridge on Adoue St, where the winning turtles are “scooped” out. The adopter of the first turtle to cross the finish line wins the first place prize of a travel voucher valued at $1500 sponsored by Stantec. The second place prize is a $1,000 shopping spree sponsored by Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union and the third place prize is a $500 Visa gift card sponsored by Scot Bryant-Horace Mann. Several other valuable prizes will be awarded to the adopters of next seven turtles to cross the finish line. There is also a prize for the last turtle that crosses the finish line. If weather prohibits the race from taking place, a drawing will be held to determine winners.

Prior to the Turtle Race, the 8th annual 1K Kids Fun Run/Walk starts at 8:30 a.m and the 5K Family Fun Run/Walk begins at 9:00 am. Individuals will receive a t-shirt for participating. For the first time this year, finishers will receive a custom Turtle Race 2020 medal. Again this year the 5K course has been officially certified as a timed race. Registration information can be found at www.alvinisd.net/educationfoundation .

Because the Turtle Race day has emerged as a festival, booth space is available for groups, organizations and individuals to sell food and other items, play games or share information. For additional information visit the Education Foundation website or contact the Foundation Office at 281-331-2586, or via email at solson@alvinisd.net

The Foundation continues to seek prize sponsors.  Sponsors will be recognized in advertising and social media. Please contact the Foundation office for more information. Be sure to follow the Alvin ISD Education Foundation and Sheldon A. Turtle on Facebook and Twitter.

The Alvin ISD Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) (charitable) organization established to create support for academic programs of the district. Money raised will be used to fund student achievement, and recognize and encourage staff excellence through innovative projects and ideas.
