The Silverlake Lions Club had a plan for 2020 that included their Annual Prom Closet at Turner College & Career High School open from February 25 to April 8, 2020. That ended in March with the pandemic.

Macy’s in Pearland donated 300 prom dresses to the Silverlake Lions Club recently.

The dresses were given for the Lions Club’s Prom Closet event, to help high school students attend prom and experience a magical evening in style.

“Once more, Pearland comes to the call of helping others. Macy’s has shown “the magic or giving” to many wishing teenagers by donating 300 prom dresses,” Lions Club member Mona Chavarria said. “The donation is estimated at a value of $25,000. Macy’s general manager, Brendan Halford, and his amazing team were at hand for the event.”

The annual Prom Closet is a community service project set up by the Lions Club to help Pearland’s young adult community in need of prom dresses, shoes, glitz, and glamour. Men’s formalwear items are also available.

The Prom Closet is set up at Turner College & Career High School in a locker room in the Physical Education Department on the first floor of the school and has set hours for students to shop.

The Silverlake Lions Club had a plan for 2020 that included their Annual Prom Closet at Turner High School to be open from February 25 to April 8, 2020. That ended in March with the pandemic.

In early February 2020, the Lions Club activities for the closet were already in motion and donations of hair/makeup for three by Altered Images Salon and Spa and tuxedo rentals for five from Al’s Formal Wear had already been received.

Marketing for the Closet had begun and donations were beginning to be accepted at three drop off locations: Dream Dinners, A-Better Plumbing, and Altered Images, all businesses on Broadway in Pearland.

Closet dates and hours had been set and by Feb. 25, the locker room had been transformed into a store and students were shopping. The pandemic ended this. But members turned their energy into a future date in 2021 and preparations for a wonderful prom thanks to Prom Closet are underway.

The Macy’s donation was a great incentive to the planning of the 2021 event.

The Pearland Silverlake Lions Club is community civic organization. Their general meetings are on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30p m. Due to Covid-19 their meeting locations are fluid.

They are currently offering hybrid meetings through Zoom and also meeting temporarily at the men’s Lions Club at 3350 S. Main in Pearland.

Their next meeting is scheduled for August 11, at 6:30pm at 3350 S Main.
